Aptanostic & Biosensor Research

Aptanostics is a new term coined, derived from the word aptamer and diagnostics. Nucleic acid aptamers have attracted significant attention in the field of clinical diagnosis due to numerous merits, such as high affinity, high specificity, smaller in size, non-immunogenicity, stable structures, and ease of synthesis. Aptamer is a short synthetic oligonucleotide, DNA/RNA that can be generated by in-vitro selection procedures and binds to a wide variety of targets ranging from small molecules such as drug, amino acids, metal ions, proteins, toxins and whole cells. Thus aptamers can be considered as universal receptors that rival antibodies in diagnostics as a tool of molecular recognition. The capabilities exhibited by aptamer far supersede that of antibodies which have also made remarkable impact on a wide range of applications. In collaboration with Dr. Subash Gopinath from National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Tsukuba, Japan, the aptanostic laboratory is newbie in Malaysia, using cutting edge technology, creating a frontier that focusing on the medical applications of aptamer. The aptanostics and biosensor group harness the aptamer to be used in diagnostics/clinical applications. The aptamer-based biosensors can improve the feasibility and reliability of the diagnostic test based on the specificity and selectivity of the aptamers generated against the specific biomarkers of pathogen.

Invited speaker from AIMST University - Dr. Choy Ker Woon

January 7, 2019 – We kicked start the year with an insightful talk given by Dr Choy Ker Woon from AIMST University. Dr Woon’s lecture is titled “Pharmacological effects of paeonol against endoplasmic reticulum stress and inflammation-induced endothelial dysfunction”. Dr Woon recently completed her PhD at the University of Malaya and is currently a senior lecturer at AIMST University.

Visit to Shanghai Asclepius Meditec Research Centre

In August 2016, Dr. Ng visited the research centre of Shanghai Asclepius Meditec Co. Ltd in JiaDing, Shanghai on his own expenses. The purpose of this visit is to establish contact with the research team in Shanghai, China that is one of the leaders in the research area about the therapeutic potential of molecular hydrogen (H2). Dr. Ng wanted to strengthen mutual understanding on molecular hydrogen research and further explore collaborative opportunities with the wider research network in China. Shanghai HongQiao Railway Station Due to the molecular size and chemical nature of H2, specialized equipments are required for research purposes. This visit allowed Dr. Ng to explore in-person, the modifications that may be adapted to existing equipments currently available for cell culture- and rodent-based hydrogen research.
