Aptanostic & Biosensor Research

Aptanostics is a new term coined, derived from the word aptamer and diagnostics. Nucleic acid aptamers have attracted significant attention in the field of clinical diagnosis due to numerous merits, such as high affinity, high specificity, smaller in size, non-immunogenicity, stable structures, and ease of synthesis. Aptamer is a short synthetic oligonucleotide, DNA/RNA that can be generated by in-vitro selection procedures and binds to a wide variety of targets ranging from small molecules such as drug, amino acids, metal ions, proteins, toxins and whole cells. Thus aptamers can be considered as universal receptors that rival antibodies in diagnostics as a tool of molecular recognition. The capabilities exhibited by aptamer far supersede that of antibodies which have also made remarkable impact on a wide range of applications. In collaboration with Dr. Subash Gopinath from National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Tsukuba, Japan, the aptanostic laboratory is newbie in Malaysia, using cutting edge technology, creating a frontier that focusing on the medical applications of aptamer. The aptanostics and biosensor group harness the aptamer to be used in diagnostics/clinical applications. The aptamer-based biosensors can improve the feasibility and reliability of the diagnostic test based on the specificity and selectivity of the aptamers generated against the specific biomarkers of pathogen.

Dr. Ng Siew Kit awarded the Young Scientist Programme Fellowship & Best Presenter

June, 2018 - One of our RNA-Bio research group member, Dr. Ng Siew Kit, had just received the prestigious Young Scientist Programme Fellowship (worth more than USD1100) to attend the IUBMB Seoul 2018 congress. Siew Kit presented his research on IRF9 and showcased his wider research interest through poster presentation. There were more than 800 participants, including over 100 speakers attended the event. At the conclusion of the event, Siew Kit was conferred the Best Presenter Award for his exciting and passionate presentation over both oral and poster sessions.  The 24th IUBMB Congress & 15th FAOBMB Congress (IUBMB Seoul 2018) was held from 4-8th June, 2018 in COEX, Seoul, South Korea. This is a flagship event of IUBMB that is held every three years, where excellent biochemist and molecular biologist from around the world congregate to showcase their research. This year, the Young Scientist Program (YSP) pre-conference event was also held from 2-4th June at Yonsei Unive...

Invited speaker from AIMST University - Dr. Choy Ker Woon

January 7, 2019 – We kicked start the year with an insightful talk given by Dr Choy Ker Woon from AIMST University. Dr Woon’s lecture is titled “Pharmacological effects of paeonol against endoplasmic reticulum stress and inflammation-induced endothelial dysfunction”. Dr Woon recently completed her PhD at the University of Malaya and is currently a senior lecturer at AIMST University.

Congratulations on the receipt of Yang Di-Pertuan Agong Scholarship (BYDPA)

May 24, 2017 - We're very glad to share the news that one of our students, Ms. Nur Nadia Che Aziz, has recently received the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong Scholarship 2017/2018. Conferment of the scholarship was officiated by His Royal Highness Yang Di-Pertuan Agong XV, Sultan Muhammad V at Istana Negara, Kuala Lumpur.  After that, she was live interviewed on Selamat Pagi Malaysia, TV1 on June 3, on her research regarding background and its contribution to Malaysia. Live interview on Selamat Pagi Malaysia, TV1 with the programme hosts, Datuk Dr Rosslina, Director of Human Capital Development Division, Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam Malaysia, and James Tan You Sian.
