Latest Publication - June 2016 - A Combined Rapid DNA Extraction and Multiplex PCR for the Detection of Porcine DNA in Raw and Processed Food
Recently, our group has published a book chapter in Contemporary Issues and Development in the Global Halal Industry entitled "A Combined Rapid DNA Extraction and Multiplex PCR for the Detection of Porcine DNA in Raw and Processed Food". This study has been previously presented at the International Halal Conference in 2014.
Abstract:
"Food adulteration is a major concern due to the increased awareness among consumers with regard to the safety of foods and the need to verify labeling statements. In this study, we have developed a PCR assay for detecting porcine DNA in raw meat and meat-based processed food products. The PCR assay also included an in-house, simple DNA extraction method. Positive results were obtained from genomic DNA extracted from raw meats and meat-based food products tested. The sensitivity of the assay was found to be 1 pg and 0.5 % adulterated (pork + bovine) meat. The assay was proven to be effective in detecting pork meat in raw and processed food."
